Step by Step

This tour of Antwerp allows you to discover the most interesting sights and monuments in just 2 hours. The Belgian city was the birthplace of Rubens and is known for its wide variety of architectural styles (from Renaissance buildings to modern designs) and its welcoming atmosphere. An expert guide will show you the most famous sights and the following list lists the main ones:

  • Cathedral - One of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. It is known for its 16th century stained glass windows, paintings by Rubens and the copy of the painting "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by the Van Eyck brothers (the original is in Ghent).
  • Brabo Fountain - Created by the sculptor Jef Lambeaux, it is inspired by a legend about the origins of Antwerp. According to folklore, the city was ruled by an evil giant called Druon Antigoon who was defeated by the Roman soldier Brabo. It is located on the centrally located Grote Markt, the market square.
  • Antwerpen Central - The central railway station. Designed in an eclectic style with neo-baroque and art nouveau influences, it is an architectural masterpiece.
  • Het Steen - Fortress built around the 11th century to defend the Scheldt River and the port of Antwerp from attack from the sea. It now houses the National Museum of Maritime Archaeology, with exhibitions on the maritime history of the city.

The route also stops in front of two outstanding museums: the MoMu (one of the world's leading fashion museums) and the Plantin-Moretus, which houses a large collection of printing tools, old books and engravings. It owes its name to the family of the same name, which ran one of the most famous printing presses in Europe between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Another place to visit is the Diamond District, one of the main centres of diamond trading and processing. It is estimated that 84% of the world's rough diamonds and 50% of the world's cut diamonds pass through here. To fully enjoy the walk, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
