Step by Step

The centre of Bologna is small and is criss-crossed by a network of cycle paths. For this reason, the tour is suitable for the general public and includes both an expert guide and the rental of a radio guide. Thanks to this tool, you won't miss any explanations about the history of the city. The itinerary lasts about 2 hours and touches on the following monuments:

  • Cavaticcio: a large green area resulting from the redevelopment of a former tobacco factory and slaughterhouse. It hosts contemporary art installations and many summer events.
  • Prendiparte Tower: during the Middle Ages, the wealthy families of Bologna erected more than 100 towers to demonstrate their wealth and power. Many were demolished and the Prendiparte Tower is one of the few survivors.
  • Torre Garisenda and degli Asinelli: the former is lower and sloping, while the latter rises to a height of 97 metres. They are true symbols of the city
  • Piazza Maggiore: the locals call it Piazza Grande and it is the epicentre of city life. Here stand elegant palaces, the town hall and the Basilica of San Petronio, with its incomplete façade. The most famous monument, however, is the Fountain of Neptune.
  • Archiginnasio: an elegant palace built in the 16th century to house the university faculties in one place. It is best known for the frescoes in the Stabat Mater room and the Anatomical Theatre, where human anatomy was studied.
  • Basilica di San Domenico: an apparently simple place of worship, with the typical reddish bricks and a large rose window. Inside there are sculptures by Michelangelo.
  • Basilica Santuario di Santo Stefano: according to legend, its origin is linked to San Petronio, patron saint of the city. It is also known as the "Sette Chiese", as it was originally composed of 7 temples. Today only four remain.

The route starts and ends at the same point which is usually centrally located in Bologna such as Piazza Maggiore or the Central Railway Station. You will receive the details once you have booked the activity.

We had with us a great guide. Really friendly, and he made the tour a very pleasant and interesting experience, through the less typical part of Bologna, but without forgetting the past history of the city.
