Vesuvius is one of the icons of Naples and the easiest way to visit it is by Vesuvius Express bus. You will travel to the entrance of the national park in a comfortable and modern vehicle, without worrying about traffic and parking. The starting point is the Herculaneum train station, while buses leave every half hour.
Another plus point is that, once you arrive, you are free to explore the protected area, reaching the viewpoints and signposted trails you like best. In total, adding the return trip plus the time to walk around the park, the activity lasts approximately 3 hours.
Vesuvius is 1,281 metres high and occupies a total area of 8,482 hectares. In addition to the beauty of the panorama, the Great Cone overlooking the Gulf of Naples is a protected area that is home to hundreds of animal species. The routes are clearly signposted and include information on the mineral formations and eruptions that shaped the mountain.
For the volcano hike, I recommend hiking boots or, if you don't have them, sports shoes. Also, it is best to dress in layers and pack a bottle of water, binoculars and sunglasses in your backpack.
