Step by Step
In this activity you will have the opportunity, for about 30 minutes, to see Leonardo Da Vinci's painting The Last Supper, one of the most important works in the history of art and the Italian Renaissance. The painting, painted by the Italian artist at the behest of his patron, the Duke of Milan, is currently housed in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which you can access without queuing or waiting.
Your art history guide will meet you in front of the church and give you a quick introduction to Renaissance art in Italy, describing how it became one of the most fertile periods of painting in the world. You'll discover why the Duke of Milan commissioned the painting from Da Vinci and the importance it had in the art and history of the time. Afterwards, you will head to see the work and have plenty of time to appreciate it.
The church that houses the painting, Santa Maria delle Grazie, is considered one of the most beautiful in the Lombard capital. Built in the 15th century, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. In addition to The Last Supper, the basilica has housed iconic works of Italian art such as the Coronation of Thorns by Titian, now in the Louvre, and the frescoes of The Passion Story by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
