How to Get to Capri from Naples
If you visit Naples and do not want to miss the island of Capri, I show you the different options you have to get there.
Capri is an island with a strong historical and cultural tradition and a place of exceptional beauty. A favorite residence of many Roman emperors for its scenic charm, it is an enclave that summarizes in its barely 10.5 square kilometers the essence of the Mediterranean.
In addition, only 37 kilometers separate it from Naples. If you visit this Italian city, you have probably been tempted to take a trip to Capri. Especially if you have already taken a tour of all the things to see and do in Naples. I show you how you can get there to make your experience as comfortable and optimal as possible.
With an organized excursion: the most comfortable way
The easiest way to get to Capri from Naples is with one of the many excursions available. You always have the option to travel on your own, although these tours offer you the possibility to forget about schedules, prices and, of course, to get rid of waiting and queues.
Here are the different excursions at your disposal.
Excursion to Capri from Naples and guided tour of the island: the basics
Many excursions offer a boat ride and bus exploration of Capri, but services may vary. For example, some include lunch and others do not, an aspect to consider when booking. However, I advise you to opt for those that include an English-speaking guide, which tend to be the vast majority.
The boat trip from Naples to the island takes between 60 and 80 minutes and the visit of the island usually includes emblematic places such as the Blue Grotto and the Villa de Sant Michelle. The duration usually varies between 8 and 10 hours.
Hiring an excursion to Capri from Naples is an excellent option if you want to opt for comfort. It is also a very varied experience, since you can enjoy the views of the coast and also get to know the island of Capri on foot and on the ground.
- Price: From 87 €.
- Trip duration: Between 60 and 80 minutes.
- Advantages: You will see the essentials in a comfortable way.
- Disadvantages: If you are looking for a complement to Capri to visit, you will have to opt for another type of excursion.
Combined excursion to Capri and Pompeii from Naples, for archaeology lovers
For art and archaeology enthusiasts there are excursions that give you the opportunity to do a good triplet: boat trip to Capri, exploration of this town and a visit to Pompeii, the famous city with the best preserved Roman ruins that have come down to us. This type of excursion includes two different methods of transportation:
- A bus or minibus to travel from Naples to Pompeii.
- A hydrofoil that will take you from the archaeological site to Capri.
Hiring an excursion to Capri from Naples that includes a visit to Pompeii is an option that combines comfort and savings, as both Pompeii and hydrofoil tickets are usually included in the price. If you want to know more, I recommend you to check this article on tips to visit Pompeii.
- Price: From 175 €.
- Travel time: Bus, 25 minutes; hydrofoil, 45 minutes.
- Advantages: You will be able to enjoy the ruins of Pompeii.
- Disadvantages: Being able to see Pompeii will mean you will have less time to explore Capri.
By the way, if you love archaeology, the great news is that there is much, much more besides Pompeii. Check here for everything you need to know to visit the Archaeological Museum of Naples. Or if you don't want to miss out on another of the world's great archaeological sites, go for a full day with tours to Pompeii and Herculaneum.
From Naples to Capri by ferry: the best way to go with family or friends
Ferry trips from Naples to Capri are not subject to seasonality, so you will have the option to do it all year round. Also, the frequencies are optimal and reach an average of 16 trips per day. Therefore, you will be spoilt for choice. The companies that offer trips from Naples to Capri are:
- Positano Jet: From 24 € one way.
- Alilauro: From 23 € one way.
- NLG Jet: From 25 € each way.
Most of these companies are very focused on very close tourist places, such as the Gulf of Naples or the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento, two destinations to visit also from Naples. This makes them interesting options to consider if you want to move around other places or make more complex connections between different enclaves, Naples and Capri.
To take this type of boat you will have to go to Calata Porta di Mossa. You can go there from Garibaldi Avenue taking the bus line 151. You can buy tickets from 1,50 €.
- Price: From 23 €.
- Travel time: Between 60 and 80 minutes.
- Advantages: Comfortable trip and with enough capacity to travel with the family.
- Disadvantages: It is somewhat slower than options such as the hydrofoil.
From Naples to Capri by hydrofoil or hydrofoil: go by yourself in a faster way
The hydrofoil is another option available to you. It has the advantage that, being a lighter boat, it is also faster. However, given its small size, it will not be possible to take a car on board and it is not very feasible to bring even a bicycle. The companies that will offer their services are:
You can take it at Molo Beverello. To move to this enclave, as well as to go to Calata Porta di Mossa, just take bus 151 in Garibaldi Avenue.
- Price: From 20 €.
- Travel time: Approximately 50 minutes.
- Advantages: It is faster than the ferry.
- Disadvantages: It is not suitable for large groups or to embark cars or bikes.
What is preferable, hiring an excursion or going to Capri on your own?
My advice is that, if you plan to spend a day in Capri, do it with an excursion. After all, you don't have that much time and going on your own always means being subject to inconveniences or loose ends in your planning.
Besides, it could be more expensive to do it on your own since, once in Capri, you will have to move around. So, to the cost of the transportation you have decided to take to get to the island, you will have to add the ones you will take once there. In this sense, the excursions offer you a competitive price that includes transportation. Therefore, you will not have to worry about frequencies or schedules, nor will you have to deal with unforeseen events.
Finally, if you go with family and large groups, an excursion is also the most convenient. Going on your own can give you more freedom, but if you travel with more people, this freedom can turn into the opposite. Above all, because it forces you to be even more aware that everything goes perfectly. However, if you already know that Capri interests you enough to spend several days there, then the option of going on your own wins points. For several days, it can even be the most economical alternative.
Tips for traveling on your own
As you have seen, the excursion options are basically the ferry and the seaplane. Without going into comparisons, I would like to point out that the seaplane can be a mode of transportation more subject to inconveniences, because air transports (especially small ones, as it is the case) depend a lot on weather conditions. Therefore, there is always the risk that your plan will be frustrated because there is a storm or storm.
Something to keep in mind especially if you travel to Naples in winter. In this regard, the ferry is a more reliable method. These are heavy vessels that, although slower than others, are not so dependent on weather conditions and high frequencies are also present in winter.
Now, only the last tip if you are traveling in summer. If you want to get cheap fares, then we advise you to do it relatively early. The demand for these trips can be very intense in summer, so the earlier you book, the cheaper it will be.
Tips for traveling with an excursion
If you opt for an excursion, it is worth paying attention to the following tips, especially if the modality you have chosen is the one that contemplates a visit to Pompeii, although it is also applicable to those that focus on Capri.
- Summer temperatures can become torrid, so bringing a hat or sunglasses with you is always a good idea. Remember that you will not always find shaded areas in Pompeii.
- Accessibility in Pompeii is not the best, so people in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility may have more than one difficulty.
- The ferry and seaplane are available all year round, but outside the summer season there are fewer excursions from Naples to Capri.
