The distance between Bucharest and the medieval part of Bulgaria is about 100 km, although once you have changed country you will be moving through different regions of the country. This activity will allow you to visit incredible villages and some of the most important places of medieval Bulgaria:
- Ivanovo, a World Heritage Site, home to the spectacular cave church of Sveta Bogoroditsa (entrance fee not included), one of the greatest artistic treasures in all of Bulgaria and home to authentic frescoes from the Middle Ages.
- Veliko Tarnovo, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, is full of charming streets and places like Konstantilieva House, a 17th century merchant's house.
- You can also visit the 12th century Tsarevets Fortress (entrance fee not included), also in Veliko Tarnovo. From here you can see the whole town at your feet and learn how it was defended.
- Arbanassi and other small villages where you can admire the streets where coppersmiths, silversmiths, icon painters and even craftsmen worked, as well as some churches of great historical and artistic importance.
