Best Time to Visit La Gomera
Are you thinking of visiting La Gomera but don't know what is the climate of the island? Keep reading!
The climate of La Gomera is subtropical oceanic, so temperatures are mild, temperate and sunny most of the year. A great thing to visit the island at any time of the year.
In this post we will discuss in detail the climate of La Gomera so that you can not only prepare your suitcases with more tranquility but also to plan the activities you will do once you are on the island.
1. When is the best time to visit La Gomera?
Any time is a good time to travel to the Canary Islands- the weather is wonderful! However, if during your stay in La Gomera you want to do outdoor activities and go to the beach, the best time to visit the island is summer, from mid-June to late September. The days are short but hot, so it is advisable to get up early to go sightseeing in La Gomera.
This is the time that most of the national tourists who visit La Gomera choose to travel, being for this reason the high season for tourism.
2. Visiting La Gomera in the summer months, the best option
If you have in mind to travel to La Gomera because you want to go to the beach, sunbathe, go out on a sunbathing tour and practice water sports, the best time to discover the island is in summer because the days are sunny and hot. Perfect for being outdoors!
Temperatures normally reach a maximum of 26/27 ºC from July to September, with the hottest day of the year being August 21, reaching 30ºC. The minimum never drops below 18ºC. For this reason, summer is also a great time for activities such as hiking.
What to pack in your suitcase in summer?
To combat the high summer temperatures, I advise you to hydrate well, wear light clothing and a sweatshirt to protect you from the wind. And don't forget to bring the summer classics for traveling to the Canary Islands: a hat, sunglasses, a swimsuit and plenty of sunscreen.
Summer parties
Summer is the season par excellence for patron saint festivals in Spain. They are not only part of the island's cultural heritage but also an excellent opportunity for tourists to have fun and learn about local customs. Here are some examples:
- July 16th - La Virgen del Carmen: The patron saint of sailors is honored and many coastal towns of La Gomera, such as Vallehermoso, celebrate them with special passion and maritime processions take place.
- July 25th - Santiago Apostle: Don't miss the beach of Santiago on this day. There, fantastic festivities are held that locals and tourists take a long time to forget.
- August 15 - La Virgen de la Candelaria: In Chipude this day is celebrated in style and people gather to sing romances to the Virgin and play drums and chácaras.
- August 16- La fiesta del Ramo in Arure: every year a different family of the village makes offerings to the Virgin and the neighbors celebrate this day with dancing and music in the street. Something worth seeing.
3. Visiting La Gomera in winter, a very appetizing time of the year
Winter is also a good time to go to La Gomera because it is a dry season. The days are longer than in Europe and temperatures are mild. Sunbathing is often possible but the sea is cold, although that is not an impediment for the most hardened tourists.
In this season, the island is very lively because it celebrates its famous carnival and the foreigners who arrive fleeing the icy European winter so it is also a good time to travel if you want to meet people and share travel experiences, whether hiking, a jeep tour or a road trip through the villages.
In general, at this time of year, maximum temperatures reach 23º and minimum temperatures rarely drop below 14ºC.
What to pack in the suitcase in winter?
If you travel in winter to La Gomera, when preparing your suitcase I recommend you to bring light clothes for the day and some warm clothes (sweatshirt or sweater) for the night. You can also take a raincoat and a folding umbrella because during this season some Atlantic storms may arrive to the Canary Islands but they are not prolonged so you can do outdoor activities without any problem.
Winter parties
During the winter one of the most important festivities of the Canary Islands takes place, the carnival, although not the only one. If your stay in La Gomera coincides with this celebration, remember to pack your costume in your suitcase because the island lives it in a very special way and you will bring a lot of souvenir photos.
- January 6th - Holy Three Kings: This is an important holiday in San Sebastian or for municipalities such as Valle Gran Rey,
- Carnival - February: The festivities take place especially in the capital of La Gomera, that is to say in San Sebastian, and the carnival is celebrated in style as in the other Canary Islands. If your trip coincides with the month of February, do not miss it because it is a very joyful event and there is music, murgas, parades, etc.
4. Visit La Gomera in spring, the bathing season begins
After the minimum temperatures that winter brings to the island, in spring the temperatures begin to rise reaching maximums of 25ºC and minimums of 19ºC. The days are sunny and the weather is mild, which is the starting signal for the bathing season in the beautiful beaches of Playa del Inglés, Playa de la Cueva or Playa Argaga.
Many ecotourism lovers come to La Gomera in spring. If your trip coincides with this season, my advice is to visit the impressive Garajonay National Park, whose interior is home to a famous and ancient laurel forest.
What to pack?
If you plan to visit La Gomera in spring to do ecotourism, something you can not miss in your luggage is a pair of comfortable shoes that will take you from one point to another of the island without foot pain. I advise you to pack some light clothing and some warm clothes as well as a raincoat in case you are surprised by clouds and horizontal rain on your route through the Garajonay National Park. The humidity is high here!
Also don't forget to pack the classic sunglasses, a swimsuit, a cap and sunscreen.
Spring festivities
During springtime, La Gomera celebrates a festival that reminds a lot of the festivities of San Juan in the Valencian Community but in the Canary style. Get your camera ready because you will take a lot of pictures.
- April 24th -San Marcos: Agulo's is one of the oldest festivals in the Canary Islands to celebrate the saint's name day. You will be surprised to see the sabina wood burning in a bonfire while the bravest neighbors jump over the bonfires to the sound of drums and chácaras all night long.
5. Visiting La Gomera in autumn, pleasant weather and low season
After passing the summer heat (especially if there is haze) comes autumn, which is also a good time to visit La Gomera since temperatures are still pleasant with maximum temperatures reaching 23ºC and minimum temperatures of 18ºC.
However, the probability of rainfall in this season is somewhat higher than in spring, but do not let this be an impediment to go to La Gomera in autumn as everything can be easily solved with an umbrella and a raincoat.
Besides, the great advantage of visiting the island at this time of the year is that it is the low season for tourism in the Canary Islands, so prices go down and you won't find as many people as in summer or winter to see the main tourist attractions of La Gomera, which is great if you don't like crowds!
What to pack in the suitcase in autumn?
If you choose to hike in the mountains during the fall, it can be cool at certain altitudes so I advise you to bring warm clothing that you can take along at some point during the hike.
Another thing you should bring in your suitcase is comfortable shoes and a raincoat in case it starts to rain. And if you are going to be walking through the villages of the island, with temperatures of 23ºC, you can take light clothes and also a jacket in case it cools down.
Autumn festivals
Autumn is a time when there are fewer festivities compared to summer, but the inhabitants of La Gomera also gather to spend time together and have fun. These are some of them.
-
October 3rd - Santa Clara: This is an important festivity in Arguamul, a remote village in the municipality of Vallehermoso, where the locals celebrate this date with great joy.
-
December 13 - Santa Lucía: Its hermitage is located in the hamlet of Tazo (Vallermoso). It dates back to the 16th century and is one of the oldest religious buildings on the island. People go there to make their offerings and petitions to the saint.
