10 Things to Do in Seville in Fall
They say that Seville has a special color but the truth is that it has several colors. And autumn is one of the best to visit the Andalusian city.
It is often said that spring is the best season to see all that Seville has to offer because in summer the temperatures are too high and winter does not invite you to travel. But autumn is often forgotten and, in my opinion, this is the best time to visit the Andalusian city.
Temperatures are mild and the influx is much lower than in spring. As a bonus, in the autumn months there are several dates and events that offer unique plans for this time of year. I tell you what are my 10 favorite plans in autumn and everything you need to know about it.
1. Don't miss the Flamenco in Seville
Flamenco is an essential part of Seville's cultural range and in autumn it lives one of its best times, because that's when the biennial flamenco show takes place.
This event is organized every two years and it is a real flamenco party. The best artists in this genre are always part of the line-up of the biennial in Seville.
The festival is held in the months of September and October in the theaters of the city, but if it does not coincide with your year of visit you can always enjoy the best flamenco shows or book a visit to the Museum of Flamenco Dance in Seville itself.
2. Visit the Cathedral of Seville
Booking tickets to the Cathedral of Seville means getting to know the monument par excellence of the city. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 along with another point that you must visit: the Alcazar of Seville.
The main reason to visit it in autumn is that there are far fewer tourists and the visit is much more comfortable, as the queues are almost nonexistent at this time.
As for activities, on October 10, a celebration is held every year for the anniversary of its completion (1506). Two days later, on Columbus Day, a floral offering is made at the tomb of Christopher Columbus in the same cathedral.
3. Take an autumn route through Aljarafe
Autumn is harvest time and routes full of special colors. In Seville, the most popular crops become must and the Aljarafe is transformed to receive thousands of visitors ready to enjoy this delicacy in its taverns.
The Aljarafe is a group of villages closely linked to the production of must and that are part of the ring of Seville. A great advantage is that many are directly connected to Seville by subway, so you have very easy to visit them.
The traditional taverns of these villages are part of the known as must route that lives in autumn its time of greatest splendor, more specifically in November. It is in this month when I recommend this route for food lovers. But if you go with children or just do not like wine, I recommend you to hire a visit to the Aljarafe in a different way, on the back of a horse. Do you like the idea?
4. Meet Isla Magica on Halloween
If you are traveling with children to Seville and you are going to be in the city on Halloween (October 31) you will surely love to know the Isla Magica amusement park on these dates.
It is an amusement park inspired by the discovery of America that was built taking advantage of the facilities of the Expo 92.
Halloween is one of the most important dates of the park as special events are made and is set according to this terrifying day.
5. Enjoy the Festival of Nations
Since 1993 the Festival of Nations has been held in Seville every autumn, an event that revives the international spirit of the 1992 Seville Expo and brings together various countries that set up their stands with cultural, gastronomic and all kinds of activities.
It is a party for all the senses that also includes a line-up of concerts by international artists. As it starts at the end of September and lasts until November, it is one of the highlights of the Sevillian autumn.
This festival is held in the gardens of the Prado de San Sebastian and I recommend that you take advantage of your visit to the event to know the Plaza de España, as it is very close.
6. Discover the Triana neighborhood in autumn
The Triana neighborhood is the most picturesque of Seville. It is one of the best neighborhoods of the city, since it gathers all its essence and in whose streets you can enjoy all the best that Seville has to offer.
It contains a huge range of bars and restaurants where you can taste the gastronomy, stores and businesses, streets and squares full of life ... In short, it is a festival for all the senses.
And why is it special in autumn? Well, because it is the beginning of the cultural season and in the Triana neighborhood this is celebrated in a special way:
- There is the possibility of booking flamenco shows in its bars.
- Its famous corrales, the typical Sevillian patios, open their doors in autumn to visit them.
7. Stroll through the Maria Luisa park in the autumn light
The parks are the best places to enjoy the autumn if the city you visit has one worth visiting. And fortunately this is the case in Seville. Visiting Maria Luisa Park in the heart of the city is not just any park, because it is one of the most beautiful that can be found in any Spanish city and I would dare to say that of Europe.
In autumn it is dyed with the typical reddish colors of the season and brings out even more of its beauty. The park has several floral areas, fountains and squares that are worth strolling through.
The famous Plaza de España of Seville is located in this park, which, besides being the lung of the city, is one of its main attractions.
8. Experience the Sevillian autumn in the style of Don Juan Tenorio
The character created by José Zorilla is a symbol of Seville and the city has always been closely linked to this figure. And in autumn there is a date in which Juan Tenorio takes special prominence: All Saints' Day. On this date, celebrated on November 1, the representations of this play are already a classic.
You can, and should, take advantage of the excuse to go to the theaters of the city and enjoy this classic of Spanish literature. The classic theater in Seville is my recommended option.
It is not the only thing you can do, as Don Juan Tenorio is set in the same city and by booking a tour of Seville you can get to know some of the real scenarios that appear in the play: the Santa Cruz neighborhood, the Plaza de la Alianza, the Plaza de Santa Marta or the Plaza de Doña Elvira.
9. Take the tour of mysteries and legends in Seville at the best time
Along the same lines of the previous activity and related to Halloween, there is another highly recommended activity to do in Seville: book the tour of mysteries and legends of the city. Seville has its own myths and fables and they can be explored with these tours especially interesting on Halloween.
These legends originate from the city's Moorish era and take place mostly in the streets of Santa Cruz. There are stories for everything from ghosts to love stories to duels to the death. A highly recommended experience to do in autumn.
10. Experience the musical autumn in Seville
Normally autumn is a season closely linked to music and culture and Seville is no exception. Given the good temperatures in these months, in the city of Seville there are several very interesting musical events beyond flamenco:
-
Candlelight: these are a series of concerts held in more than 90 cities around the world and consist of classical music performances on an improvised stage surrounded by candles and generally in important places in the city.
-
La noche en blanco: is usually celebrated on the first Friday of October and consists of a series of cultural activities such as concerts, exhibitions or theaters that take place at night. Most of these activities are free and are distributed throughout Seville.
Temperatures in Seville in autumn
The autumn weather in Seville is perfect for visiting the city. In the three months it lasts we can find temperatures similar to summer, but milder, especially at the end of September, and a little cooler as winter approaches.
October is the intermediate month for those who do not want neither too cold nor too hot with highs around 20 degrees and lows ranging around 10 degrees.
The passage of the Guadalquivir through the city softens the climate and even in autumn the clear days are common and the hours of sunshine are enough. It is also the rainiest time of the year, but in Seville this does not mean that it rains frequently, far from it. In short, the weather in autumn is the most balanced of the year in Seville.
Tourist flow and prices in Seville in autumn
The greatest virtue that autumn has in Seville is that it offers us an outstanding balance between the weather and the number of tourists visiting the city. From September to November the crowds are much smaller and it is easier to find good deals on accommodation than, for example, in spring.
Prices also go down as a result of the lower number of tourists. In fact, autumn is, after winter, the cheapest time to travel to Seville.
What to pack in your suitcase to visit Seville in autumn
Given the mild weather in autumn you will not have to complicate your life when it comes to packing your luggage. But just to be sure, here is a short list of the essentials you should bring to Seville in autumn:
- If you travel in early autumn, in September or early October, it is still a bit hot so it is best to bring long but light clothes and a jacket for the evenings.
- In late autumn it is enough to go with long clothes and a sweater or sweatshirt and something warmer for when the sun goes down.
- Footwear is also important since Seville lends itself to know it walking. So choose your footwear prioritizing comfort.
- The sun in Seville is still strong in early autumn so do not forget sunglasses, hat and sunscreen for it.
- If you go in October or November it is advisable to bring an umbrella just in case, although there is not much chance of rain.
