Step by Step
A private tour is recommended for those who want to travel in comfort and without being dependent on public transport schedules. It includes pick-up from your hotel in Bangkok, if you select this option, and then you will travel with your group in an air-conditioned vehicle. The itinerary takes approximately 7-9 hours and can be customised. However, these are the main stages:
- Wat Lokayasutharam - This temple is famous for the large statue of reclining Buddha with his body covered by a yellow cloth and his head resting on a lotus flower. It depicts him at the moment of death, entering Nirvana.
- Wat Phra Si Sanphet - Temple built in the 15th century by King Chao Sam Phraya. Its tower (prang) is magnificently preserved and housed the treasury of the ruling family.
- Wat Mahathat - One of the most important temples in Ayutthaya. It is best known for the stone Buddha head emerging from the roots of a tree. Its date of construction is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to have been erected at the behest of King Boromaraja I in the late 14th century.
- Wat Ratchaburana - A place of worship unlike any other in Ayutthaya. Indian influences are evident in its architecture. You can climb to the top and admire the view.
- Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Built in the 17th century by King Prasat Thong, it pays homage to Cambodian architecture. Its name means "Monastery of the Prosperous and Victorious Temple".
In addition to the temples, the tour includes a visit to the Chao Sam Phraya Museum. This place houses the royal ornaments found at Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Mahathat. Among the best, it is impossible not to mention the Sceptre (Tharn Phra Corn) and the Sword of Victory (Phra Saeng Khan Chai Sri), decorated with carvings and precious stones.
