The Format
The Copa America has a two-phase format. A group stage and a final stage. The teams are divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. In each group each team plays 3 matches to face all the teams in each group.
Each team is awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and none in case of defeat. At the end of the group phase, the first two teams in each group qualify for the final phase, which consists of quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. The crossings in this final phase are made by drawing lots, taking into account that teams that have been in the same group cannot play against each other in the quarterfinals.
All the details of the format and rules of the competition can be consulted in the official rules published on the official website of the Copa America.

The teams of the Copa America
And going into more detail, here are some information pills about each of the participants of this 2024 edition and their history in the competition:
Argentina
Argentina is the reigning champion after beating Brazil in the final of the 2021 edition. Along with Uruguay, it is the team that has won the Copa America the most times, a total of 15 times, and is one of the pioneers of the competition. The famous Albiceleste jersey has been worn by legends such as Messi, Maradona and Kempes. Argentina will be hoping to repeat the crown in the United States, although it will not be easy.
Mexico
Of the CONCACAF teams, Mexico has the most history and prestige. Although they have never won the tournament, they have managed to reach two finals in 1993 and 2001. This is their 13th participation in the Copa America.
United States
United States: The host team of the Copa America is also one of the newest teams to participate in the tournament. Their first participation was in 1993 and since then their greatest achievements have been the two semifinals reached in 1995 and 2016. The latter was the centennial edition of the Copa América and was also the country's first time hosting the competition.
Brazil
Brazil is undoubtedly one of the world's great teams. Winner of 5 World Cups, "la canarinha" is the third team with the most Copa América titles, with 9. Legends such as Pele, Ronaldo or Ronaldinho speak of their greatness and their demand to lift an America Cup again, which they have not won since 2019. This is their 38th participation.
Peru
The Peruvian national team is among the historic winners of the Copa America. And they won it twice. It was in 1939 when they lifted the title for the first time and it was not until 1975 when they managed to repeat the feat. Peru has now participated 33 times in the Copa América.
Ecuador
This is the 30th edition of the Copa América for the Ecuadorian national team. It has hosted the tournament on 3 occasions and its best result to date was the two 4th places it achieved in two of the editions in which it hosted the tournament, in 1959 and 1993. The objective of this edition is to equal or surpass that 4th place.
Uruguay
If we talk about historic teams in the Copa América, Uruguay is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding. It has participated in the tournament more times than any other team with 45 participations, and together with Argentina is the one that has won it more times with 15. Uruguay has been present since the first edition in 1916, an edition it also won, and its last cup was lifted in 2011.
Colombia
The "cafeteros", as the Colombian national team is known, have already played 23 editions of the Copa América and even won the tournament in 2001 in a tournament held in their own country. To repeat such a feat in 2024 is very difficult, but they are certainly a team to be reckoned with.
Chile
Chile. The United States brings back good memories for the Chileans. And the fact is that in 2016, in the centennial edition also held in the USA, they lifted their second Copa América title. The first was a year earlier, in 2015, coinciding those two years with their golden era led by historical players of the national team such as Alexis Sanchez or Arturo Vidal.
Venezuela
The Venezuelan national team was the last one belonging to Conmebol to debut in the competition. It was in 1967 and since then they have participated in 19 editions. Their best result was achieved in 2011 , reaching the semifinals.
Panama
Panama The most novice of the competition. They have only played in one Copa América. It was in 2016 in the centennial edition and in their debut they were not able to get past the group stage. In this, their second participation, the goal is clear, to surpass the result of 2016.
Paraguay
Paraguay: One of the classic teams in any Copa América. Paraguay has played in the third most editions of the Cup, only behind Argentina and Uruguay. Since its debut in 1921 until today, it has participated in 38 editions and has lifted the title in two of them, 1953 and 1979.
Jamaica
After Panama, Jamaica is the second most novice in terms of Copa América participations. This 2024 edition will be its third edition with a clear objective; to achieve its first victory in the tournament, something it did not achieve in its debut in 2015 or 2016. Getting past the group stage is an even more ambitious goal for the Jamaicans.
Bolivia
Bolivia is among the winners of at least one Copa América. They won it in 1963, playing at home in their own country. In 1997, they also reached the final, but this time they lost to Brazil, thus achieving a runner-up finish. In total, Bolivia has played in 28 Copa América until the 2014 edition.
Canada
Canada is the only team making its debut in the competition and it will do so in style, participating in the opening match to be held on June 20 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Canadian team has reached the Copa America 2024 by eliminating Trinidad and Tobago in the qualifier they played in March, winning 2-0.
Costa Rica
Los Ticos, as Costa Ricans and their national team are known, will play in the Copa America for the sixth time after their last qualification in the 2016 edition.
