Step by Step
Minneapolis is home to the world's largest and most contiguous skyway system, a network of second-storey elevated walkways connecting 80 city blocks. Originally designed to revitalize downtown commerce, today it is an essential part of the city's architectural and cultural landscape.
This 2 hour and 15 minute walking tour begins at the iconic Foshay Tower, where you'll ascend the Skyway to begin your exploration. Along the way, you'll discover fascinating sights such as the Capella Tower, which houses a stunning light sculpture by Jason Krugman and glasswork by Dale Chihuly. You'll also pass the Minneapolis Public Service Building, home to an unmissable collection of public art.
One of the most historic points of the tour is Minneapolis City Hall, which took nearly 20 years to complete. There, you can visit the rotunda and rub the toe of the Father of Waters statue, a local tradition to attract good luck.
The tour continues to iconic landmarks such as the Nicollet Mall, a pedestrianised avenue that has been the commercial heart of the city for decades, and the IDS Building, whose Crystal Court is considered the epicentre of the Skyway system. You'll also pass the famous Mary Tyler Moore Statue, a tribute to the iconic TV series that immortalised Minneapolis.
You'll end the tour back at the Foshay Tower, where you'll have the option to climb the city's only open-air observation deck, located on the 31st floor, for an unparalleled panoramic view of Minneapolis.
