Step by Step
This experience takes place in Cape Otway 's Great Otway National Park in southern Victoria. Here you will meet a local guide and expert conservationist who will accompany you on a 1.4km walk lasting just over an hour. Along the way you'll see a variety of environments, including lush forests, tree ferns and grasslands. The price also includes the hire of binoculars and headphones so you won't miss a single detail.
During the tour, the guide will explain the characteristics of each natural environment and its most common animals. With a bit of luck, you will be able to see the following species:
- Koala - Lives in eucalyptus forests and is easy to spot by clinging to branches. It sleeps up to 18 hours a day, mainly during the hottest times, and is easy to spot dozing in trees.
- Bandicoot - Small rabbit-like marsupial, widespread in Australia and especially on the island of Tasmania. It feeds mainly on invertebrates that it finds by means of its long nose.
- Kangaroo - The marsupial par excellence. It lives in more or less numerous herds and some specimens can reach a considerable size, reaching up to 2 metres in height. There are two species: the giant kangaroo (Macropus major) and the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).
- Potoroo - A small rodent-like marsupial that lives in the undergrowth of tropical rainforests. Its speciality is burrowing in the ground, but it is difficult to see it during the day, as it is a nocturnal animal.
However, the most sought-after animal is the tiger quol. Also known as the tiger cat or spotted-tailed quol, it lives in the eastern regions of Australia, although its habitat was once much more extensive. A fierce predator, it feeds on platypuses, snakes, possums and wombats, but also on the carcasses of larger species.
During the activity, you can also visit the Conservation Ecology Centre to learn about the conservation projects they are supporting and learn about research techniques in a practical way.
