Step by Step

This independent tour is a great way to explore Montreal on a bicycle. The rental lasts a full day and includes everything you need: helmet, lock, repair kit and a map with cycling routes.

With more than 700 kilometres of bike paths, the Canadian city is easy to explore on two wheels. The list below lists the spots you can see from the saddle:

  • Vieux-Montréal - The original core of the city. Its cobblestone streets are home to cafes, shops and monuments such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, Bonsecours Market, City Hall and more.
  • Parc du Mont-Royal - Montreal's green lung, famous for its lookout over the city. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the same creator of New York's Central Park.
  • Chinatown - The first Chinese immigrants settled here in the late 19th century because of its proximity to the railway, where many of them worked. It's the perfect place to try bao, dim sum, bubble tea, ramen and more.
  • Île Sainte-Hélène - Island/park on the St. Lawrence River. Here is the Montreal Biosphere, a large metal dome that encloses a museum dedicated to the environment.
  • Le Village - Montreal's gay neighbourhood, famous for its art exhibitions, open-air shows and the giant chessboard at Place Emile.
  • Lachine Canal - This man-made waterway opened in the early 19th century and was designed to allow boats to negotiate the Lachine rapids. Today you can still admire the old brick factories converted into lofts and shops.
  • Île Notre-Dame - Artificial island in the St. Lawrence River, famous above all for the circuit dedicated to Gilles Villeneuve. In winter, its lake becomes a large skating rink.

Good biking experience. Perhaps a bit more strenuous than I expected, but lots of interesting places to visit and quite nice neighborhoods to hang out in. Recommended.
