This Aegean island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines the beauty of its Mediterranean landscape with a wealth of history and culture. Already in Ancient Greek mythology, the island was considered a sacred place, later becoming a cosmopolitan cultural and commercial centre, attracting traders and travellers from all over the Mediterranean.
Some of the main s ights you will see during your visit are as follows:
- Sacred Lake Delos: According to Greek mythology, this lake was believed to be the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. It was considered sacred and was used for religious rituals and ceremonies.
- Terrace of the Lions: This is one of the most recognisable symbols of Delos. It consists of a row of sculpted marble lions, dating back to the 7th century BC. Originally, there were nine lions, but now only five remain in place. These guardian statues were a symbolic representation of divine protection and used to stand at the entrance of an ancient sanctuary.
- House of Dionysus: This well-preserved house features impressive mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes of daily life in ancient Greece. It is believed to have belonged to a wealthy family and is an outstanding example of the architecture and domestic art of the period.
- Temple of Isis: This is an ancient temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis. It was built in the 2nd century BC during the Hellenistic period. This temple is a testament to the religious variety in ancient Greece, as it incorporates elements of Egyptian mythology and worship in a Greek setting.
- Archaeological Museum of Delos: The Archaeological Museum of Delos houses an impressive collection of artefacts and archaeological finds discovered on the island. Among the exhibits are statues, sculptures, frescoes and other objects of historical and artistic interest.
