Step by Step

This excursion will allow you to admire the archaeological area of the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento and the Roman Villa of Casale, in Piazza Armerina. The trip takes place in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle departing from a central point in Catania. The activity lasts approximately 8 hours and includes an expert guide , who will tell you the history of these two sites.

The Valley of the Temples is home to magnificently preserved cult areas. Built in Doric style, they are dedicated to Concordia, Juno, Hercules and Olympian Zeus. The latter was the largest temple in Magna Graecia, the area of the southern Italian peninsula and Sicily colonised by the Greeks from the 8th century BC. The archaeological site corresponds to Akragas, a prosperous Greek city-state. Situated on a mountainous plateau, it controlled the sea routes of the western Mediterranean and was easily defended.

With an area of about 3,500 square metres, the Roman Villa of Casale is one of the largest ever discovered. It is known for its mosaic floors, depicting mythological and hunting scenes, animals and games of the time. Its size and rich decoration suggest that it belonged to a very powerful and wealthy person.

The 5688 artifacts exhibited at the Pietro Griffo Regional Archaeological Museum immersed us in the history of the region, from prehistoric times to the Greco-Roman era.
