Step by Step

On this tour you will visit Houmas House, an old southern manor housebuilt before the Civil War. Throughout the 2-3 hour tour, you will be accompanied by an expert guide, from whom you will learn about the history of the plantation and the residence.

You will learn about the life of both the owners of the mansion and the slaves who worked on the sugar cane plantation. During the visit, you will see the Houmas House staff dressed in period costumes, which will help you to visualise all the scenes told during the tour.

You will see the tools and artefacts used by the slaves of the time on the plantation, and learn about the sugar-making process . You can wander on your own through the gardens surrounding the mansion, which cover around 38 acres, or15 hectares .

During the tour of the mansion, you will also have the opportunity to see the artwork of Houmas House, as well as a multitude of antique furniture that is still preserved on the property. A walk through a historic gem that is still in pristine condition today.

The plantation is also home to restaurants with breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, which are not included in the price of admission, but are a great way to get a taste of New Orleans cuisine.
