Step by Step
This activity allows you to admire the killer whales, which frequent the Alaskan waters between May and June. The cruise departs from Seward - located in the Kenai Fjords National Park - and enters the ocean waters. A hydrophone, an underwater waterproof microphone, is used to listen for marine wildlife.
The experience lasts approximately 4 hours and includes the use of binoculars, drinks (coffee, water and tea) and an expert guide. If you wish, you can also buy some snacks on board. The activity takes place in Resurrection Bay but does not follow a fixed itinerary. The skipper will navigate the waters where marine wildlife is most likely to be present.
The stars of this excursion are the killer whales, which belong to the same family as dolphins. Black and white in colour, they are very sociable and long-lived animals, as they can easily reach 90 years of age. Unlike other species, they are characterised by a matriarchal structure. Males do not participate in the rearing of offspring and the "head of the family" is the eldest female.
It is the most widespread cetacean in the world - it lives in all oceans - and feeds on turtles, sharks, rays, but also sperm whales and fin whales. Killer whales use very complex hunting strategies, with each member of the pod playing a specific role.
In addition to the killer whales, you can also see humpback whales, seals, puffins, bald eagles and other animals. The excursion is also possible in case of rain. It is recommended to bring a rain jacket.
